01 Your household & timeline

Use your contractor’s expected period without a working kitchen. You can change it later.

Exclude babies needing separate feeds from the child meal count. Choose dinner servings below to allow for smaller appetites or planned leftovers.

02 What will still be available?

Select only equipment and spaces available outside the work zone. Confirm any temporary appliance setup with your contractor.

03 The extra living costs

Enter your own household estimates in US dollars. The starting zeros are placeholders, not price estimates. Include tax and delivery fees where relevant.

Add laundry, storage, care or other extra costs

Enter only spending above your normal routine. Use a weekly average for costs that occur on some days.

How to use the renovation survival planner

Start with the number of weeks your kitchen is expected to be out of use. Add your household details, then select the equipment you can use outside the work area. The planner uses those choices to create a preparation checklist, practical routine reminders and a seven-day dinner rotation. The meals are starting ideas rather than a full nutrition or allergy plan. Repeating an easy dinner is perfectly fine during a remodel.

Enter the costs you expect your household to pay. Food spending is compared with your normal weekly food budget, so the estimate counts only the increase. Add any extra laundry, storage, childcare or pet-care expenses, plus one-time setup purchases. The result shows the additional allowance for your original timeline and for a project lasting your chosen number of extra weeks.

Set up a temporary kitchen before demolition

Choose a food-preparation and eating area outside the construction zone. Before boxing everything up, keep the equipment you actually need accessible: a few dishes and utensils, food containers, a can opener, cleaning supplies and the appliances you have agreed you can use. Label boxes by contents so a delayed project does not become a daily search for essentials.

Plan the entire routine, including where food will be stored, where dishes will be washed and where waste will go. A working microwave is useful, but it does not solve refrigeration or cleanup. If no suitable washing-up area or dishwasher is available, simplify meals and make a temporary cleanup arrangement before work begins. Follow appliance instructions, and have the contractor confirm suitable outlets, clearances and work-area boundaries. Outdoor grills belong outdoors.

Plan meals around the equipment you have

The dinner suggestions match your selected appliances and refrigeration access. Without a refrigerator, the planner limits suggestions to shelf-stable ingredients intended to be opened and used for that meal. Without a suitable sink or dishwasher, it favors meals with simpler cleanup and leaves out options requiring more cookware. Confirm that you can still clean the equipment and eating utensils you use.

If your options are limited, the seven-day plan repeats meals. You can choose each dinner, schedule takeout or leftovers, exclude foods, adjust servings, or use the Weekly Meal Planner to organize a wider menu. The starter grocery list covers the displayed dinners only. Plan breakfast, lunch, snacks and any infant-feeding supplies separately, and follow product storage directions.

Budget for everyday life during a kitchen remodel

Construction quotes and household disruption costs belong in separate lines of your budget. For example, a family that normally spends $200 per week on food and expects to spend $280 during the remodel has an $80 weekly food increase. Over six weeks, that is $480 before any other extras. A $100 setup purchase brings the allowance to $580. Two additional weeks at the same spending rate would bring it to $740.

The planner uses your own figures rather than local price assumptions. A zero total means no extra costs have been entered or calculated; it does not mean living through a remodel will be free. Storage contracts, accommodation and care arrangements may have minimum booking periods or cancellation fees, so replace weekly averages with appropriate allowances for your situation. Transfer the result into your Home Project Budget Planner once to avoid counting the same spending twice.

Questions to ask before work starts

  • On which dates will the kitchen, water, electricity or access routes be unavailable?
  • Where can we prepare food, wash up and keep everyday essentials?
  • How will the work area be separated from children, pets and living spaces?
  • When should we expect the loudest work, deliveries and inspections?
  • Who will tell us about delays, cleanup and when each space can be used again?

This tool organizes household logistics. It does not determine whether it is safe to remain in a home during construction or when an area is safe to re-enter. Confirm those decisions and any necessary relocation with qualified professionals. For additional planning ideas, see Houzz’s guide to living through a kitchen remodel.

Frequently asked questions

Does this estimate the price of the kitchen renovation?

No. It estimates extra living expenses while the kitchen is unavailable. Use the Home Project Budget Planner for materials, labor, permits and other construction costs.

What happens if the renovation takes longer?

Choose Extra weeks to compare to estimate a delay without changing the original duration. One-time setup costs stay unchanged. The delay button switches the selected total and displayed dates.

Can I save and print my plan?

Yes. Save on this device stores your inputs and checklist progress in this browser. It does not create an account or sync across devices. Clearing browser data can remove the saved plan. Print plan opens your browser’s print dialog, where you can print or save a PDF if supported.

Can I use this for a bathroom or whole-home renovation?

This first version is designed for kitchen renovations. Its meal logic and preparation checklist assume the main problem is losing kitchen access. A broader project may require additional professional planning and temporary accommodation.
