How to adapt the starter plan
Month assignments are planning prompts, not universal maintenance deadlines. Move heating, cooling, gutter, and sprinkler tasks for local weather. Add storm preparation, pool, septic, chimney, or other specialist service only when it applies to your home. Follow manufacturer instructions and use a qualified professional for work beyond your skills.
Build a Seasonal Home Maintenance Planner for Your Home
Start with the month you want to plan. The starter checklist includes monthly smoke-alarm and HVAC-filter checks plus one planning prompt for each month. Treat those dates as a starting point: a mild-winter home and a home with freezing weather will not need the same seasonal schedule. Edit the task descriptions and notes, move a task to another month, or remove work that does not apply.
Use the notes field for a filter size, the name of a service company, a product instruction, or a question to ask during an appointment. Add a custom task for equipment or features specific to your home. Each entry belongs to one month and has its own completion mark and costs. For a recurring custom task, add a separate entry in each month when it is due.
Estimate Costs Without Treating Blanks as Free
Enter an estimate when you have a quote or a useful planning amount. Leave the field blank when you do not know the cost yet; enter 0 only when you expect no cost. The summary shows how many tasks still need amounts, so a partially priced plan does not look like a complete budget. Actual spending is separate from estimates, and completing a task does not automatically copy its estimate into the actual-cost column.
For example, a $40 estimate and a $35 actual expense remain two separate figures. If another task has no quote, its blank estimate is flagged rather than presented as a known zero. Monthly totals follow the selected month, while the full-year line always includes all tasks. Use Seasonal Reminders as a Starting Point
The U.S. Fire Administration recommends monthly smoke-alarm testing and following the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions. ENERGY STAR’s maintenance checklist discusses monthly filter checks and professional preseason heating and cooling service. The planner helps you record those reminders; it does not inspect equipment or determine which repair is safe to do yourself.

To print, choose one month or Full year and select Print checklist. A separate, clean view includes task descriptions, notes, completion marks, and the amounts you entered. Use Print / Save as PDF in that view. A full-year plan can span several landscape pages so the notes remain readable. At the end of the year, keep a PDF with your service records before starting a fresh checklist.
